Monitoring, prophylaxis, and treatment of infections in patients with MM receiving bispecific antibody therapy: consensus recommendations from an expert panel
Blood Cancer J. 2023 Aug 1;13(1):116. doi: 10.1038/s41408-023-00879-7.ABSTRACTBispecific antibodies (BsAbs) are emerging as an important novel class of immunotherapeutic agents for the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM), and are set to be more widely used in clinical practice. However, this new class of therapies is associated with a distinct adverse event (AE) profile that includes cytokine release syndrome and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome, as well as AEs leading to increased infection risk such as cytopenias and hypogammaglobulinemia, and infections themselves. As preliminary data with this clas...

Engaging Multistakeholder Perspectives to Identify Patient-Centered Research Priorities Regarding Vaccine Uptake Among Adults With Autoimmune Conditions
CONCLUSION: A multistakeholder group identified key topics as critically important priorities for future research to decrease vaccine hesitancy and improve uptake of vaccines for adults with autoimmune conditions.PMID:37127530 | DOI:10.1002/acr2.11546

Fight Aging! Newsletter, February 13th 2023
This study investigated whether taller Polish adults live longer than their shorter counterparts. Data on declared height were available from 848,860 individuals who died in the years 2004-2008 in Poland. To allow for the cohort effect, the Z-values were generated. Separately for both sexes, Pearson's r coefficients of correlation were calculated. Subsequently, one way ANOVA was performed. The correlation between adult height and longevity was negative and statistically significant in both men and women. After eliminating the effects of secular trends in height, the correlation was very weak (r = -0.0044 in men and ...

Cutaneous manifestations of COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccination
J Dermatol. 2023 Jan 13. doi: 10.1111/1346-8138.16651. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn December 2019, a new infectious pathogen named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was identified in Wuhan, China. Transmitted through respiratory droplets, SARS-CoV-2 is the causative pathogen of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Although this new COVID-19 infection is known to cause primarily interstitial pneumonia and respiratory failure, it is often associated with cutaneous manifestations as well. These manifestations with COVID-19 can be classified into seven categories: (i) chilblain-like skin eruption...

Vaccination Reduces Risk of Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease and Other Neurodegenerative Disorders
Discov Med. 2022 Sep-Oct;34(172):97-101.ABSTRACTNeurodegeneration is an increasing problem of aging. Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Parkinson's Disease (PD) are the most frequent forms of age-related neurodegeneration. Infectious diseases, in general, confer a risk of AD. Influenza and pneumonia vaccinations reduce risk of AD. Being vaccinated against pneumonia between ages 65-75 is associated with a reduction in the risk of AD afterwards. Protection against bacterial and viral infection is beneficial to the brain since these infections may activate dormant herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes zoster virus (HZV). HSV-1 a...

Vaccination efficacy in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia
Leuk Lymphoma. 2022 Oct 21:1-15. doi: 10.1080/10428194.2022.2133538. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a disorder of mature malignant B cells with multiple elements of immune dysfunction. Infections are common in CLL patients due to complex immunodeficiency. Vaccines are used as preventative measures for common diseases including influenza, pneumococcus, tetanus/diphtheria and shingles in the general population. Vaccines are utilized to mitigate this risk, although there have been some concerns regarding the efficacy of vaccines in the CLL population due to the inherent complex immune dysf...

Hospitalizations for infections in primary Sj ögren's syndrome patients: a nationwide incidence study
CONCLUSIONS: pSS patients are at higher risk of hospitalization for infections. The increased risk of hospitalization for mycobacterial infections illustrates the potential bilateral relationship between the two conditions. Vaccination against respiratory pathogens and herpes zoster virus may help prevent some hospitalizations in pSS patients.KEY MESSAGESPrimary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) increases hospitalization risk for community infections: bronchopulmonary, skin, dental, ear-nose-throat, intestinal infections and pyelonephritis.Hospitalizations for zoster and mycobacterial infections are also increased in this populati...

Challenges and insights in immunization in patients with demyelinating diseases: a bench-to-bedside and evidence-based review
CONCLUSION: Patients with DDSNC need differentiated immunization in relation to additional vaccines, contraindicated vaccines and timing of vaccination.PMID:35976311 | DOI:10.1590/0004-282X-ANP-2022-S121

Lower disease activity but higher risk of severe COVID-19 and herpes zoster in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus with pre-existing autoantibodies neutralising IFN- α
CONCLUSION: The production of non-neutralising and neutralising anti-IFN-I antibodies in SLE is likely to be a consequence of SLE-associated high IFN-I serum levels, with a beneficial effect on disease activity, yet a greater viral risk. This finding reinforces the recommendations for vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 in SLE.PMID:35973806 | DOI:10.1136/ard-2022-222549

Varicella-Zoster virus reactivation following severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2  vaccination or infection: New insights
CONCLUSION: This study indicates that the occurrence of VZV reactivation is clinically relevant. However, our findings suggest that COVID-19 vaccination is safe, and remains strongly recommended.PMID:35931613 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2022.07.022
